Some Santiago travel information

The currency of Chile is the Peso and is depicted in these pages as $. At the date of last page revision US$1 = $514 (five hundred and fourteen Pesos).

The information and prices are accurate to the best of my knowledge at the time of writing but they could all change tomorrow; asi es la vida. All prices in these pages are shown in Chilean Pesos.

At immigration you will be given a tourist visa form. Do not lose this! In the airport international arrivals area there is a small information desk, ATMs that accept Visa/Plus and Mastercard/Cirrus and give Chilean Pesos, and the usual car rental company desks.

If not renting a car you have three options to travel from Santiago airport to the city. You can take the airport bus Centropuerto for $1000 which will drop you at either Estacion Central or Metro Los Heroes. There is a mini-bus shuttle service CTransVip which can take you direct to your hotel either in Centro for $3400 or in Providencia for $3700, or you can take a taxi.

Tourist information (if not available at your hotel) can be found at the Municipal Tourist office in Merced 860 (very close to the Plaza de Armas) but it is only open Monday - Friday. Telf. 632-7783, Web-site: http://www.ciudad.cl/turismo/datos.php

Santiago has an excellent public transport system. The three lines of the fast and smooth underground Metro run until 10:30 p.m.; the off-peak single fare is $460 (avoid travelling at peak times if possible as the trains get very crowded). Buses run on routes all over the city, the fare is $390, and some routes operate nearly all night.

The international telephone dial code for Santiago is ++56-2.
